Been in the beta for a while now, and just wanted to say if any of you have been anticipating this game its well worthe it! the game bloody rocks! if you are at all interested in comics or not even at all this game is good.
im really impressed so far with it, and it seems they will be making the april 28th release date!
Nice! Does the game at all suck now with class-based powers and such? At first it looked really interesting, but when the skillsets were all re-arranged, I wasn't so sure. Also, does it hold your attention for quite some time?

i havent noticed any suckage at all with it. the powersets are very balanced and very exciting. even 2 people with the same powersets can develope their character very differently as a buddy of mine and i are finding. we both chose blasters energy and electric based but i chose magic as my power's origin and him technology and our powersets are already different, but equally as useful. he chose a more AOE route and myself pure damage.
the game progresses a smidge slower than most other MMOGs ive played, but it offers PLENTY to do. there are thousands and thousands of missions, quests, and encounters to do, and if those arent your flavor there are plenty of zones to play in as well.
the game also have probably the most advanced powerleveling/grouping system i have ever used... they offer a sidekick system where say i were 25th level and you were 5th level i could sidekick you and your level would advance to 3-4 levels lower than me so rough 21-22 lvl... you would maintain your current powersets but would gain the dmg ability of a 20+ person. you gain max experience for your level if you still 5 so even though you are level 21 you are working your levels 5+ and when you level you gain to 23and so on, but are really gaining at 5-6-7-8 etc. once you unsidekick you return to your characters real level and if you leveled at all you gain the ability to train and gain the powersets etc gained. my friend who had been playing since 1st round of betas SK'd me and i went from 2-12 in about 3 days... was rather fun (3 days of only 4 hour gaming windows btw).
i really think the game offers a lot for both hardcore players and also casual players as well... only downfall at this time is no pvp. there is rumor of a future patch that opens up villain toons which would allow pvp but this is speculative and only rumor at this point.
unfortunately i cant say much more due to strict NDA, but am open to answering as much as i can safely.
Im sure there will eventually be pvp and super villians just because there is so much demand for it. If they didnt go for it they wouldh ave to be morons, and I dont think they are.
Anyways, I just may have to try this game out, at least for a month if nothing else. Ive been following it for a while and felt sorta the same way, as soon as they changed the classes I stopped following it for the most part.
Im glad its turned out to be a good game, and I cant wait to fulfill my Xman mutant childhood fantasies!

Maybe if SB didn't ruin my experience with MMOs I'd give it a try. Only redemption in my eyes will be WoW :P And if that somehow sucks I'll just quit altogether and play FPS for the rest of my life...

the pre-order idea is that you get in starting march22 and every preorder will be in by april7th, then you get to play beta till april 22 when they wipe the game, then you can restart the 25th and reserve your toons name for the public release the 28th.

Went to the mall to see Dawn of the Dead (it was AWESOME!) and afterwards I stopped by EB to talk with my bro and take a looksee at the CoH pre-order thingy. Pros to knowing someone working at a game store (albeit a shitty one, trust me I know) is free shit. Pre-order CoH? Nope. But I did get the disc and sure enough, I just made an account and am awaiting entry into beta...weeeeeee. Also, I think they're doing the same thing for Lineage II. I have one of the discs lying around but I don't know if I can deal with PvP being the main focus right now.

I'm really interested in playing CoH beta but I never registered on the forums. What would be the quickest way for me to beta test the game, without pre-ordering, if it is even possible at all?
Dunno knockout,but the preorder only cost me 5 bucks. For a month of play on the most stable game I have ever played, 5 bucks is no big deal.

You can download the client starting i think later in april for the open beta... so that will be your free time playing.
i highly recommend trying it, and PVP may be something in the near future, because there is also talk about letting players become villians as well... so we will see.
as far as lineage 2, i played the Korean beta for about 3 months so i got a good taste for the game, i have signed up for the us open beta but gotten no reply with CD key yet so who knows if i will get in in time.
Guys this game is very solid and ALOT of fun so far, so if ya can get in do so!

Definitely more and more badass each day. I've put mirrored versions of my characters from Prime onto Pinnacle, where I've focused my playing. Look for me, my main is Symbiont (Dark/Dark Science Defender).
Let me know if you want to use Teamspeak, (a few of you already are set up), I can set up a COH room in the Frost Horde TS room. I do see another group from LOC has a room set up and 2 peps have been using it for some time. Its free they only ask that you sign up on their board, (looks just like this one here).

Have to say the costumes I have seen in world are amazing. I was however hoping to see actual mechanical limbs and what not, maybe that is later.
The game play and graphics are not exciting in my opinion. Am really sad to see the zoning in a 2004 game. The fact that you have to zone to go into a building is deplorable. Zoning backin AO was bad enough, four/five years later, I don't think so. If Micrososft and Turbine could figure out a way not to zone for entering caves and what not for AC2, everyone should be able to do it.
I realize trying to do a MMORPG in a city is tough, but don't feel they implemented it well. The city is devoid of ambient activity and places to go.
It seems that CoH is just a RPG online rather than a MMORPG if a difference can be made there. In a RPG online, everyone follows the same path/story kills the same mobs to get to the end game, where in a MMORPG, you can choose what to see when and where to go kill. Not a huge distinction there but still a difference.
The fact there is no real ability to develop a community other than a group of "superfriends", I mean do you get to build a "Hall of Justice" and get to hang out there eating hot dogs?
I am a huge fan of comics, have a bunch of them in the basement from the old days as well as some recent ones (you can buy comics for like 10 to 25 cents each at comic shows. Even on Ebay get a box of 300+ comics for like $30 plus shipping.) So I have nothing against the genre. I just expect more in 2004.
i agree with some of your points.
on your note about the hall of justice... yes that is in the works as we speak... soon SG will be able to purchase headquarters that i believe will be able to be customized and decorated inside as well as out. I think once they get it implemented it will be a little better.
i do however agree with the who zoning bit... its quite annoying! who knows what the future will hold for the game... but there is rumor of some big changes on the way

From the start it may not seem very impressive, but the beta was SOLID and the dev team is on top of things. They have a ton of cool stuff planned for the first month and so on, so it'll be something to keep an eye on.
As for the server/supergroup thing. I'm planning on playing the PINNACLE server as The Last Firstborn. If you guys want to get together and plan a supergroup, drop me an e-mail -- d@autumnsdescent.com -- and if you don't want to start on Pinnacle, we'll figure out a server.

Also, the city is full of ambient activity! Criminals breaking into warehouses, cars, stealing purses, clockwork robots gathering scrap parts, Nazi armies forming, zombies puking all over each other.. it's great.

Ok.. second night of playing thoughts...
Still love all those costumes, I guess it is the benefit of not having to make 30 different swords, 30 different maces, etc.
The zoning for missions is more palable now. Still kinda decreptit(sp?) on the inside and still kind of weak missions compared to previous games.
Leveling is way good.
Also like the way different zones are totally different in appearance. Unlike in AO where you would run over a hill and just zone to the other side of the hill. CoH zone system is well done. Like the sewers and the river zone. Wish the zones were bigger though.
Like the enhancements and inspirations, well done and original.
Complaints.. the price.. The game definitely grows on ya for some reason.

I have to admit that the $15 is pretty silly, but that's NcSoft for you; Lineage 2 has the same price structure. No biggie though, a 3 month chunk will even it out a bit.

The game retails for $40 rather than $50 so that balances out the first few months also.

Also, I preordered the game, but didn't fucking get the 3-day head start (store was all out of pre-order discs or something). Makes me so angry. Out of the 6 or 7 people that I'm playing with, I was the only one that happened to, and I even got the pre-order earlier than some.

Depends what you want, Luxa. We can either join with these people or form our own. I originally wanted us all to be one giant supergroup, but a bunch of these people are being idiots, so I'm second-guessing that. And don't want to you guys to have to put up with people you don't want to :D So if you guys get in contact with each other and everything works out then great, otherwise we can still form our own supergroup!
And Grok, the gameplay in this game is the most fast-paced of any MMORPG to date. It's technically timer-based gameplay, but you can run around and knock enemies off stairs and flying away unto the ground.. fly up high in the air and snipe them with long-range blaster abilities, etc. etc. In fact, the gameplay is probably the thing that got me into this game the most.

from what I understand, they announced the City of Villains expansion at E3. This should be the introduction to PvP but I'm not sure how it's all gonna work.
BTW, we have to get together in the game and do a Task Force mission. I missed out on these in beta, but did one last night. Takes hours to complete and you go with your team from building mission to building mission completing various objectives.

I've been thinking about the supergroup thing again. What if we went with a different variation on TFH? Keep it in the cold reference area. Basically, thinking along the lines of stuff like deep freeze, cryogenic, possibly "cold cell." Let's see if we can go somwhere with this since a bunch of us are in and I've got some good peeps on my friend list.

Amazingly no lag. I guess that is based upon the limited amount of people allowed within a server.
Graphical effects of powers are really cool. For the first time I saw someone with the same powers as I was using.
Am still amazed by the costumes. The big guys are the best. The freakiest are the regular size guys wearing fodoras and wife-beater lycra tops. "Let me tap dance you to death"
Perez Park Graphics are great.

Leveling depends on how you're going about it. It took me quite a long time to level up from 1-10 cuz I did it all solo. If you have another person of the same level with you, it goes by much quicker and doesn't suck the crap out of XP. When you start breaking past 10 it takes awhile to level. Could take an hour or two. So yeah, 2 is appropriate depending.
I do missions constantly. In between missions, while running to contacts and such, I beat the living crap out of whatever I come across that won't hand my tights back to me. It's cool to get into a team where the members all have missions so you can all do it together and rake in the XP and influence.
Yes, you can only combine like enhancements to achieve the + and ++.

Also, and I think you have to be lvl 10 or 12 for this, start shopping for your enhancements are the specialty stores.
the bonus is much better if it is from your specific backgroud, ie tech, natural, magic etc.

Yeah, I just got done reading the manual and was wondering about the specialty enhancements. Now just to find the specialty stores. I suppose it is the contacts.
Also, am a little worried I selected the wrong contact when I had a choice. Worst case, I hope I can get back on track.
Side note.. falling damage is about 5-10 points per floor, I did some experiments and over twenty stories or so, I did a swan dive and came in at 218pts of damage.
Ohh that /sidekick function is great for grouping if we want to start grouping.
And the team colors need to be black I think, or else I may be screwed on my costume which is pure black.
You can switch between your regular colours and supergroup colours at any time :)
I tried messaging you once mojo, but you must've not seen me! Or ignored me.. in which case I'll cry.
With super groups you choose two basic colors and an emblem
then you can change whatever you like to match the group colors, ie just the chest or put on the emblem.

The emblem is extra gay, but I think you can lose it, not sure cuz I didn't get a chance to test it out in beta.

The one I was in last night, some fellow quit right after we took the mission which basically screwed us because the missions are generated based upon number and level of participants. It was a bitch none the less and the team broke up after two attempts at not even getting by the first mobs.
I would rather do task force missions with the horde at an appointed time and date so we could know that we will have a few hours of game play ahead of us.
Best grouping action I have experienced in a while deathcow... with a good team present you can wreak havoc in the trial zones just blasting everything in sight. Ya they need some action videos.

I'll be on from late tonight (1AMish to about 5 or 6ish EDT) and since I have off tomorrow, I'll be on sometime around noon until who knows. Let's see if we can coordinate a TF mission.

Ahhgg.. got booted when I died.. can't get back in.. hell have to go to bed any way.. need to get up at four am tomorrow..
We did a task force mission tonight, but it only took us about an hour and a half.. I think mainly because the mobs weren't too tough.
I remember something saying the rewards for doing a task force would be high. Soooooo......what did ya get?
I don't think I got anything :)

I had so much fun tonight.. been playing since I got home, and it's almost 5, and I'm not done yet :0 So about 10-11 hours.. gonna try and hit 19.
We were in some crazy areas with our group, with armies of demons and ninjas and shit like that. I have a couple screens, but they don't do it justice. Jaron saw some of the mayhem in one of the missions :) But it wasn't as crazy. Cool areas, too. I thought this game would get a little redundant, but it's still fun so far!
I think it's the pace of the fights, hectic is not even the word.
Oh, and did we mention you get to beat the snot out of neo-nazi's? Well yes! You can! It's quite satisfying! Come on folks... join us!
Hehe Jaron, yep :) It looks like we'll all be level enough to do those missions ourselves, soon!
We were also fighting guys that had replaced limbs with scythes and hammers, and some had POWERSUITS that could revive them upon death. I think Luxa was there for that :)
Sounds sweet can't wait to hit those with ya guys!
